>> thanks for joining us. the top stories we're following on this tuesday, january the 15th. if crews are battling a pier fire in the east bay. this is causing delays to amtrak and the capitol corridor. we are live on the scene. >> several counties in the bay area are also posting a gun buyback program today details straight ahead.

>> we're also working up to cold mornings. a freeze warnings in effect is mourning for most of the bay area. >> we will star with our developing story. contra costa county of fire crews are still on the scene of an abandoned pier that caught fire just before 4:00 this morning. if to get you more news faster we will turn to jackie's sizzle who joins us live from the scene carry it >> an old abandoned. pierre was burning. it was really hard for them to fight the fire because is where the paralyzed. there are tracks between it and the martinez street. they stated that they had to wait for the fire bolt to our arrived. they started putting water

on it and because it is an old pier it is very hard for them to fight it. he s >> this pier is about 80 to 100 years old perry ed it is very problematic for us. it has very heavy timber. it will burn for a while. >> it looks like they do have it under control but they probably will be out here a little while longer. as you can look down here the railroad tracks run right near its periods they stated that some amtrak trains were delayed. the other issue is that the concern was the some of the timbers may fall off the pier and head down to the

sugar factory. because of that they put the factory on alert so that they are aware. it looks like that basically everything is under control. they are calling this suspicious because it is abandoned and there was no electricity on the pier. if they stated that the electricity could not have been the reason for the fire to start. >> there were delays this morning to a capitol corridor. this use is that amtrak track weight. this is adjacent to the pier. you're in pacific also uses it. capitol corridor and some amtrak trains were delayed for about 45 minutes. >> we are not tracking any hot spots but here is a quick commute check for you.

there is a backup at the bay bridge toll plaza. the south bay is only slow at 1 01 is light on the peninsula and through the north bay. >> it is very cold outside and in fact sonoma county is down to about nine degrees. we have several locations that are sitting in the mid to low or 20s. novato is coming in at 28 degrees. it is much colder than yesterday and of the winds are not a factor. the coldest air is dropping to the ground. off the temperatures will continue to drop for the next half hour. ice is not a factor. there is not a lot of moisture outside. the

headlines. marin county is sponsoring an effort to get guns off of the bay area's streets with its first gun buyback event today. if the county will pay $200 for a semi automatic guns, and $100 for other guns, as long as the weapons are still working. today is a buyback runs today from 11 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.. if you can drop off your gun at these locations at police departments in novato, silver fell, larkspur and,reyes station. you do not have to be just from marin county, they have opened it up to residents from san francisco, sonoma or contra costa counties. if you do need to show proof that you live in one of

these four counties. >> new affirmation out this morning reveals that the pilot of the oil tanker that struck a tower on the bay bridge last week, switched course as he was approaching the bridge. just why the 61 year-old changed courses as the over say lamar near the bridge to generate a seven is still unclear. also contributed to accident or ticketing fog, a faulty began and dangerous currents. according to investigators, kleess and lined up the tanker to passed through the middle of the bridge between the " c " and " d " towers, but at the last minute he tried to switched the opening between the " d " and " e " towers, ultimately hitting the " e " tower. the full

>> welcome back. we are watching gas prices this morning at the national average for a regular gallon of gas continues to rise. luckily here in the bay area we have not seen much of a change in prices. here are the current averages around the bay area. in san francisco, they are coming in at $3.67. in oakland, they're coming in at $3.59.

freeze and frost advisory in affect. this will expire at 9:00 a.m.. it is a clear start to the morning and afternoon we will continue with sunshine. the temperatures will be a little bit warmer than yesterday. the fifties will be back. some of our south bay spots will climb up to 57 degrees. later on tonight it will not be as cold. it will be in the 40's widespread. >> as we look at future cast 4 headache a.m. the light purple on the screen will be in the 30's. at 40's will be by the waterfront. by lunchtime will see widespread 50 degrees. not necessarily the case for today. the 40's are back in

the forecast as we head into tonight. everyone will be in the '50s and upper 50s for santa rosa, oakland and its daily city. satellite and radar shows that we do have some high pressure that is in control. we will keep clear skies around and the temperatures will not be as cold for the morning hours. we will see a little bit of a warm-up as we head into the next couple afternoon's. the temperatures will be in the upper 60s for friday and into the weekend. >> it is now 717 a m. it >> i will give you the good news. we are not tracking any hot spots. there have not been any major incidents or delays. the

bay bridge toll plaza westbound has a backlog that has grown. it is up to 18 to 19 minutes out of macarthur mayes. the shore freeway still looks good. if you are heading to the san mateo bridge we cut in the next hour or so see a 22 minute drive time if the commute follows the same. right now the drive time is great. it is 11 to 13 minutes. the golden gate bridge 1 01 southbound is heavy but they have no delays from the south tower >> it is 21 minutes from your ride from hercules to berkeley. it is a little bit longer coming out of concord. there it 17 minutes from 242 leading down to

walnut creek. sam malone valley on 580 is slow for the dublin area. even the 680 south bound is not too bad. it is a little bit of slowing from the guadalupe parkway. we're picking up a little bit of slowing through more ran for 1 01 south. the drive time is just above 30 minutes. >> freezing temperatures are creating a high demand for portable heaters. in fact, some stores are running out at a man i get any more until after the cold snap. that is not the case at ace hardware in else are we told. there are shelves and two rooms full of portable heaters. he even though, sales have doubled compared to this same time last year. the store manager says that

purchasing extra heaters is always a gamble for them, but this year it may pay off. >> police are asking for your help to help them identify a man who robbed a san rafeal bank earlier this month. if you are looking at surveillance photographs of him. authorities say, a suspect entered the west of mayor cut bank on francisco boulevard and demanded money from a teller. they say, once he was given the cash he fled on foot. if the suspect is described as a white male in his 30's, standing between 5 and 6 and 61. he weighs between 160 to 200 lbs.. >> the sampras's go police

department releases the sketch of a man who attacked a woman in the mission district. this is a sketch of the suspect who attempted to sexually assault a 31 year-old woman back on january the sixth. just before 3 in the morning, the woman was walking down 23rd street towards church, when a man lunged at her and grab her head and threw her to the ground. he is described as an asian or hispanic male, 25 years of age, with a buzz haircuts and slight beard growth. to >> a routine traffic stop and santa rosa lee's to the arrest of a sex offender with knives and pot. chp officers stopped a pickup with a broken taillight on santa rosa ave. after the

man gave false names, police were able to determine that day had stopped a robert mcdowell. which is a confected set sex offender, he felt to register, who was driving with a suspended license. police also fall the several large knives and a half pound of marijuana. the offender is in possession of the knives and marijuana. mcdowell was already in 8 people were

>> welcome back. a developing right now, contra costa county fire crews are battling a fire at an abandoned pier in crowded near the carqyrquinez bridge.

it started around 350 this morning. the coast guard is helping because of their breed may be going into the nearby water. we spoke with firefighters who explained why this fire burned so long. firefighters are calling this fire suspicious, but the pier is so far gone that the investigation is want to be very difficult. the capitol corridor trains are delayed and amtrak trains will likely be delayed due to the proximity of the fire on the tracks. >> we will now go on to bay area weather and traffic. >> a lot of people would prefer rain than the cold.

it is freezing just about everywhere. san francisco is still clinging on to the 40's. the wind is not a factor like it was yesterday. there is not getting in. we have seen the weather in the mid-20s but it is now down to 19 degrees in petaluma perry said it is a cold clear start and a freeze warning and frost advisory is just for every one. here is a closer look at the numbers in your neighborhood. he is 35 degrees out the door in oakland. livermore is coming in at 33 degrees. >> we will keep clear and dry weather for the several next days. it will feel like spring as we head into the weekend.

>> welcome back to the kron 4 morning news. now to the widespread outbreak of flu. which is killed at least 20 children around the country. here in california for adults have died from the flu. and the sickness could just be getting started here. at last check, the flu is widespread in 47 states. that does not include california. >> at some kaiser permanente facilities in northern california there simply was not enough as it is to meet demand but more is on the way. >> doctors a 30,000 more vaccines are coming will be destroyed it to their hospitals and facilities so as possible. but it is not just kaiser that is running out of the stocks, other medical facilities are having the same problems.

>> welcome back to the kron 4 morning new tracking a hot spot on interstate 80 in the westbound direction where a vehicle fire had for awhile blocked lines. the good news is the fire has been extinguished. the vehicle has been moved to the shoulder. all of the emergency vehicles have clear the lanes. the slow traffic which does reach back almost a highway 4 has not hurt the commute as much as i might have expected. conditions were light enough that the drive time for the strong freeway is only 27 minutes from hercules to berkeley. normally it would be about 32 minutes at this

hour. because of overall light conditions even with the vehicle fire. it is not the worst ride you have encountered. we are treading in new accident here in fremont. a south bound at the cold of road. again the to four hot spot with slow traffic out of hayward union city and to york. and the ride into fremont--newark. >> the bay bridge westbound ride pretty good conditions. a 16-18 minutes maize drive. easter freeway a little less. the nimitz freeway in less than that. your ride to the san mateo bridge highway 92, this is the hour when we would expect to see things really start to slow but the drive times are still running between 11 and 13 minutes. that is a good ride. for the golden gate bridge ride 101 south bound for the quiet here and no delays to speak of through marin county. we have an incident 34101 south bound so far.

>> welcome back to the kron for more news here is a new hot spot the nimitz freeway 80 that the cold road has backed up the traffic into san leandro. surprisingly the drive time is not as bad as you might expect. again lighter the new traffic. it is a 40 minute commute time from san leandro and to fremont. it should be running about 45-46. even with the delay you are still a bit ahead of schedule.

>> contra costa county fire department continues to pour water on the fire to make sure it is completely out. you can see in the background the car came straight. the fire broke out on this abandoned pier of around 3:00 a.m. this morning according to the contra costa county fire district. >> they say it is suspicious in nature because it is abandoned and there is no electricity out on the pier itself. there's really no way for it to start. there were able to battle the fire from the shore for a while. as you can see ultimately they had to call in the fire both from the college costa county fire protection agency. to start spraying water as pier itself. because of its age the estimate between 75 and 80 years old and it is oil soaked to protect the wood. they say it may smolder for a while. >> one of the other issues is is uncorking a straighin the.

they want to make sure the fire does not spread to the sugar sector. they have been pouring water on it to make sure it is completely out. one other issue there are railroad chetracks that have to be shut down for a while. the amtrak train is back running through the area. there are some delays. it looks like the pier fire is out at this point. >> thank you jackie. we're glad no one was hurt. >> and george we are seeing some residual delays. >> where the fire hose is is
